Movie CollectionBeing a film major, I have spent a great deal of time watching films. I have an ability to be able to name a movie by just seeing seconds of it (as long as I had seen the film). It amuses nobody when I do this, but I feel it is one of the few ways I can show off. When we got a VCR in 1983, my mother told me to tape anything that I liked. So I did. I now have a collection of over 1,000 video programs, most in deterioriatng SLP mode. We, or more to the point, I was cheap. The idea of preservation didn't really occur. I labeled the tapes, and kept them in the basement. Now the video collection is in a state of despair; some tapes are fading fast, some look great. Labels are falling off, and it is impossible to find a tape quickly (unless its' me, because I have an idea of where things are). A few years ago, I set out to renumber and record the tapes into a video log. I found a program I felt I could work with, and then the big sidetrack happened; I moved out of my mom's house. With the tapes buried under crap there, and me with no inclination to go retrieve these things, I am at a standstill. One day, I promise to rescue those tapes, relabel them, rewind them (the print-through must be atrocious), and love them. Gold are in dem hills, I tells ya. All episodes of Get A Life. Twelve Hours of SCTV, Dr. Katz. All of the trimmed early years of SNL, with no musical guests (just the good bits). Dr. Who. Monty Python. Movies like Popeye. Kid shows from the past, like Uncle Floyd. Foriegn movies, Cult Movies, Forgotten Movies. The other real reason I don't do anything with these tapes is because I focus my energy on collecting DVD's now. I am up to 250 of those, only movies I would watch several times (or the supplemental materials have to be great). I buy online for maximum savings, spending way less than $20 each.
